Once everything was loaded, we headed to <a href=\"https:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/fishboat\/fish\/management\/hatcheries\/sea_center\/\">Sea Center Texas<\/a> in Lake Jackson\u2014about 20 minutes away. Why a fish hatchery? It came recommended by an artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/clouded_dreams\/\">Sarah Felder <\/a>(<em>check out her artwork<\/em> ) I\u2019d met at a show. I messaged her on Instagram while the kids were still asleep\u2014she has kids Coen\u2019s age and called it a hidden gem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hands-On Wonder<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As we pulled up, we weren\u2019t sure what to expect\u2014but the hands-on experience started immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When we arrived, the center welcomed us with a large, shallow tank about waist high, filled with aquatic life visitors could touch. A volunteer stood nearby explaining everything in the tank. Coen thought it was way too cool\u2014though at first, he was scared to touch anything. But after watching his sissy do it, he got brave enough to give it a try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The display room was fairly small, but the tanks were fascinating. We asked about tours of the hatchery, but they told us there weren\u2019t any that day. Luckily, a volunteer who was on his way out offered to stay and give us a quick tour. completely into it, asking a million questions. The volunteer lit up\u2014he clearly enjoyed being challenged by their curiosity. Stocking waters near the ocean is one of the hatchery\u2019s main missions. He even brought us to areas not normally seen on public tours\u2014like the feed prep station and broodstock tanks\u2014offering a behind-the-scenes look that thrilled the kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We found little lessons in every moment\u2014about patience, curiosity, and keeping your cool when the truck sinks into sand.
