Quick Summary

Kazimir Wolfe doesn’t go by his real name – not if he wants to stay alive. He’s on the run from the police, who think he murdered his aunt, and from the real killer, who still wants him dead. His life is a string of construction jobs, constant moving, and keeping everyone at arm’s length.

Why? Because Kaz is a wizard. As far as he knows, the only one left. No robes or staffs here – just a Glock 9MM, a crumbling RV, and a sarcastic talking dog named Duke. Duke’s not just any dog; he’s inhabited by the spirit of a 3,000-year-old Babylonian wizard. That helps. Sort of. He still chases squirrels.

The world used to have magic. Then it didn’t. Now it’s coming back, thanks to a dangerous merging of our world with a darker realm called the Nether. Kaz didn’t ask to be in the middle of it, but he might be the only one who can stop it.

Narrator Vibes

R.C. Bray nails Kaz’s dry, sarcastic delivery. He balances humor and tension without overdoing either. His voice gives Kaz the rough-around-the-edges charm needed to pull off wizardry with a sidearm. He also gives Duke, the talking dog, just the right mix of wise mentor and canine comic relief.

Winkler Party Thoughts

I picked this series because I’d already read it and loved it – and I knew Cate would be hooked on the sarcastic wizard-with-a-Glock vibe. If you’re a nerdy parent with potentially nerdy kids who like dragons, D&D, or sarcastic pop culture trivia, this one’s for you. It’s also a great entry point for talking about storytelling tropes, genre mashups, and fantasy logic. Cate’s even started identifying these patterns in movies and books – it’s become one of her favorite skills.

Did My Kids Actually Like It?

Cate is relistening to it at 14 and loves it even more the second time around. Coen hasn’t heard the whole thing yet, but he constantly asks to start it while we wait to pick up his sister from school. I keep telling him we have to wait for her. Even though he doesn’t get every reference, it sparks questions and conversations. We’ve paused to explain tech, history, and pop culture – sometimes even looked things up together. That’s a win in my book. Coen and Cate absolutely love Duke.

Things to Know

  • Mild Language & Violence: Some strong language and violence are present, but nothing overly graphic. Still, younger listeners might need guidance.
  • Broken Family Themes: The main character is on the run, living without a stable family. There are themes of grief, isolation, and chosen family.
  • Talking Dog with Ancient Spirit: Yep. A sarcastic wizard-possessed dog is a key character. Expect some unexpected philosophical nuggets… and squirrel drama.

How We Review Audiobooks

At Winkler Party of Three, we listen to every audiobook on real-life road trips — with one dad, one tween, and one elementary schooler in the back seat. We rate each story based on how well it holds attention during long drives, whether the content is kid-appropriate, and if the narrator makes the story come alive. We’re especially mindful of single-parent travel needs, and we’ll always be honest about whether a book was a win (or a skip) for our crew.
